Oh trust me :P I'll be 80 and I'll still be watching Saint Seiya

Just downloaded some more of Saint Seiya.
The first 52 or so eps are subbed by AZN anime, and the quality is alright...
... then there's the later half of the episodes.
I don't know who the hell subbed it, no trace of the fansub group on the video, but the quality goddamn SUCKS.

Bad much?
This must originally be a horrible very low bitrate encode. Then some guy got it, and decided to upsize it and re-encode it with higher bitrate, with no further editing. (Because if it was directly encoded from a good source into that bitrate, It would never look like that.)
They upsized it when they never should have (Size of macro-blocks looks like it was an upsize... to 720x480... should be downsizing looking at the quality), they got the aspect ratio wrong (double you tee eff is 720x480... 3:2? It should be 4:3), they never bothered cropping the rubbish off sides, they didn't reverse the telecine (it's still left in 29.97fps, and I can see a pattern of blended frames indicating an obvious telecine), and the files are 230+MB in size each (dude, if it's going to looks so bad anyway, use lower encoding settings... can encode it to 1/4 the size make it look way better maybe). «---- Some people have no bloody idea how to encode. (EDIT: Which is fine if your doing encodes for yourself at home, but not fine if you plan on releasing your stuff to the public on the internet)
...
I can't stand it. I'm going to completely re-encode all the latter episodes encoded by that annonymous group/person, and apply some very serious deblocking and cleaning to it.
And that's just flipping through the file, so I don't know the translation quality yet. But I bet it sucks.
EDIT:
One theory I have is that someone downloaded the streaming DivX version beaner found, and decided to upsize and re-encode it... (Obviously don't know how to do it properly)

wow that looks fudgeed up
re-encoding is the best thing to do, I've found that alot of the old animes you find on the net are always encoded really bad, one i was searching for was f'd up the a hardcore, i usually deal with it unless i don't have the patience to watch it like that, then i have to re-encode it
hope you enjoy watching it though, its a good anime, it might be cheesy at first but please remember this is from like the 80's ok
edit to reply to your edit
that's probably right, thinking about it that must be it, well good luck anyways, I've never like to re-encode because of the time, I'm not patient enough most of the time

what the fudge is that!?
I'd delete it on-site if I saw it!
If you can recover that, I'll congratulate you, Assassinator.

Yeah, it's horrible, but also the only option I've got.
How does that look?
Before:
After:
This frame turned out quite well, besides for being a bit blurry. But blurry > blocky.
...
Before:
After:
Still can see the blocking in this frame. Couldn't get rid of all of it. The color differences is just too great. :\. Time to turn up the strength a bit more.
