ok what i need is a good encoder that will input mpeg2 (renamed vobs) and encode them to MPEG4 Video (H264) as an avi file... i havea bunch of videos coded like that but i can't get a hold of the person to ask them what program they used.... anyone have any ideas?

looks like MkvMagic matches some of what you want to do but idk you have to try it

thanks that says it will convert.. i already found lol...  mpeg4 h264 avi make really good music videos at low bit rates
Something based off x264.

Interestingly, in the multimedia encoding world, free/open source outright beats commercial software.

Something like XviD4PSP could work, though if you want the best results, probably better to manually convert via x264.


H.264 + Vorbis  or H.264 + HE-AAC  in an MKV container will give best results.

It's free, and gives u quite a lot of control.

The main issue is that it's somewhat easy to crash... and not that newbie friendly.

It's odd - I've yet to see a decent GUI for encoders.  Oh, By the way, I dislike .NET apps, so yeah...

But MeGUI is decent otherwise - it does give you a lot of options, presuming you understand most of them...
i use Virtual Dub with KLiteMega Codec pack to encode my videos.
i use this convetor called winavi video convertor but im not sure it does h264
