I thought they use these machine things to determine the wavelength, since all notes have a fixed wavelength. And then adjust according to the wavelength.

admittedly i haven't listened to much, but he has the violin hit some really odd notes that work well in his own context, kind of the same reason i don't really dig much jazz but i really like thelonius monk.
opposite side of that, i like dvorak as well, who is much more steeped in structure and a really antiquated feel
Paganini was like a crazy violinist during his time - apparently, no-one could do what he could. In fact, he was the one (I think) who inspired Liszt to the same on the piano.

i had a couple of really nice instrumental cds somewhere but i dunno where they r now
