So yeah , I found I have a lot of free time lately , so i figured I'd play more visual novels .
Problem is I haven't heard of anything in a while so I'm kind of out of the loop.
Games I've played
Clannad
Higurashi 1-4
Umineko (part 1 ?)
Tsukihime series - 2 of them (didn't like it)
Fate/stay night « skipped round for "ero routes"..
So I'm not really looking for any kind of genres in particular , but i don't like "dark' " ones much ...
Eroge is okay as well ; played a couple .

i loved Little Busters to bits x)
The non-ero version has a patch, but it's not complete
look on tlwiki for it

Thanks PB

I'll definitely look into it !

Ok...
1. What kind of stuff do want?
Happy happy slice of life stuff?
Srsbsns stuff?
Traditional fall in love with cute girls stories?
Sob stories like Clannad?
Depressing stuff?
Or maybe just something to fap to?
2. Can you read Japanese? (Because that opens up a whole lot more options).

If you're playing F/SN for ero, you should stop now. Firstly, the ero there is bad. Secondly, the ero there is less than 5% of the whole thing. And, F/SN is very very long (>50hrs), you really don't want to spend all that time just to get a handful of crappy ero scenes.

I can't!
For I have no knowledge of ze visual novelle...
So what's the point of telling us that?

Dunno,
Family project,
Canvas 2. I guess
what Proper said is a good choice too, but it's not really fully translated (probably will be in a few months).
Most of the fan translated VNs are usually of the more serious and darker kind.
Usually when people ask me, I recommend them stuff like
True Remembrance or
Planetarain as intros because they're short, have no ero, and are generally regarded as being pretty good.
Sharin no Kuni, Himwari no Shoujo, is generally my recommendation for something standard length.

Most of the translated "normal" nukiges (eroge that are focused mainly on sex) come from professional licensors like Jast and MangaGamer. So I don't know, you can read up their catalogues.
Anyway, here's VNDB's ratings sorted from highest to lowest.
http://vndb.org/v/all?q=;fil=tagspoil-0;o=d;s=rating
Muv-Luv Alternative is the highest rated thing both in the west and in Japan, but that's quite dark, depressing, and bad stuff happens. So I don't know if you'll like it. You need to read
Muv-Luv (school life comedy) first if you want to read MLA though.
Got DS? There's a small handful of decent VN's for DS. (I think. I'm classing a VN as being something with a lot of reading and the odd interactive segments.)
I'm not too up-to-date on VNs, but here's what I can think of.
9 Persons, 9 Hours, 9 Doors - DS VN by the guy who created Ever17 or something. Very neat story; no hershey kisses, but puzzles instead... which is an improvement in my opinion. (You can't watch hershey kisses in front of younger siblings... or at least, I wouldn't.) Multiple endings, too; although, it's fairly easy to see where the plot line branches.
Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright series - The odd stab of humor, picking out logical fallacies in testomonies, and murder mysteries. Across at least 3 games.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - A VN by Cing, centered around a guy called Kyle Hyde. Solve the mystery of Hotel Dusk, and find out why it's relevant to Kyle's problems.
The Last Window: The secret of Cape West - Sequel to Room 215, more puzzles, picking up paperclips and interrogating people for information. Has references to the first game as well as one other game at least. ("I like suits, they're comfy and easy to wear!")
Professor Layton series - Don't be fooled by the cartoony graphics, some of these puzzles are real stumpers. Two games I can think of off the top of my head.
All games mentioned are available in English. They might not be VN enough for you, but you might enjoy them nonetheless.
Now, somebody tell me, does Sengoku Rance qualify as a VN? Never played it, but it's fairly heavy on the ol' hershey kisses, I've heard.

Lololol. Who told you about that?
No Sengoku Rance doesn't really qualify as a "visual novel". Yes, it's quite heavy on the sex.
It's not really the kind of stuff you recommend to people though, you find out about it and try it yourself. I'm not saying it's bad... with the high ratings, you can be certain a lot of people find it to be pretty good.
Just that it's the sort of thing where if it clicks with you, then great, otherwise you should just stop. Errr... if you're a big moral meatstick or a feminist or something, you should stay far far away.
