I prefer torrents because they just go by themselves and you don't have to monitor them.
Even though it's still like that with direct downloads, I still prefer torrents. Also, direct is normally on rapidshare or something like that, so it takes an awful long time because of the time limit. Unless you have a premium account of course.
i have premium accounts on both rapidshare and megaupload
so that's how i do
i prefer torrents, but recently i have been using direct downloading because most of the torrents i download have no seeders :(
There is no which is better than which. Each has strengths and weaknesses.
Arguments for direct downloads:
=Direct downloads don't die because noone want to seed.
=They don't go rediculously slow like torrent does when there are few seeders/leechers.
=And from the above 2 points, direct downloads have a higher completion chance.
=More user friendly. Easier to use.
=Don't need to configure ur torrent client and all that stuff to acheive maximum efficiency.
=Can use anywhere. most public locations block torrent and other P2P.
=Don't have to seed.
Arguments for torrent and P2P
=If u are connected to lots of peers, it can be faster than direct download.
=No need to deal with restrictions imposed upon u by file hosting sites, e.g rapidshare.
=FAR LARGER range of stuff u can be found.
=Can get all kinds of illegal stuff.
=Can easily resume downloads (irect downloads can also be resumed using download managers, but not all sites support them)
=Easier to seach for stuff, e.g isohunt.com. There's nothing like that for direct downloads.
Basically, if i can download something directly, using HTTP or FTP, i almost always do that, unless the site gives very poo poo speed, like 2kbit/s.
If i want illegal stuff/stuff i can find only on P2P, then torrent or eMule. Limewire sucks, and so dows most other P2P.

I just introduced my friend to Torrents a few days ago but he is still continues to use Limewire and I'm trying to un-convince him from using it :D
I used to use Limewire all the time, but there's too much corrupt (virussed) stuff on there now lol.
Just got into torrents the other week, but everything seems to be really slow - I guess what I want to download is the same stuff as what everyone else wants, so there's heaps of leeches and not many seeders.

torrent forces all the leechers to also upload at the same time as downloading, therefore, if there's a lot of people using that torrent, ur speed should be very fast, rather than very slow...
Probably u didn't set up ur torrent client propperly.
I mostly use torrents, sometimes direct downloads but i hate rapidshare
