You could try if your PS3 supports the Fan Overpower thingy.... some people say it's totally harmless and blows all the dust out and others say it can harm the PS3 so do this on your own risk!

1. Make sure your PS3 wasn't used for a while so it's cool.
2. Turn off the back main power switch.
3. Hold the eject button, while holding it turn the main power switch back on.
4. If your model supports it the PS3 will howl up for about 15secs with all fans at max speed
5. After the PS3 is finished howling turn off the main power switch again and wait 15mins for it to cool down again.

How can I tell if my PS3 supports it or not?
Thanks for the suggestion, I might try it.
60GB models don't support it. i tried. lol

Nothing happened when I tried it...
:/ Seems like you Model doesn't support it then..... sorry Sadist
well my suggestions - while not perfect should help. firstly vaccum cleaner - suck all the vents except the disc one using a standard vacuum cleaner - that should clear out any dust. next thing - is your console on its side? i ask because the heat can build up more if its lying flat - mines lies side on and has no problems like that. but if you must have it lying flat then get a desk fan and aim it at the right side vents. last thing i would try, if you feel brave (brave as in possibly damaging your ps3) you could buy some thermal compound and open the machine up and repair it yourself. alternativly (and a lot safer) you could take it to a local shop and get them to do it - it may help provided damage hasn't been done. its got to be worth a try. if you decide you can fix it then good luck,as i have heard some horror stories (google is your friend). good luck.

Hmm, I'll take into consideration to putting my PS3 on the side, it probably won't fix the problem because I think it's permenate damage. But it'll probably help it from getting worse.
I'm also not brave enough in my skills to repair it maybe I'll see if I can get someone else to fix it.
yeah ive heard stories of people pulling the chips off the board when disassembling them so your probably wise to get someone to do it for you. if the console does it right away in any game then damage has been done but if it takes time to happen you might be in luck. you have nothing to lose by trying the side standing method.
Obviously turning it's side didn't fix the problem.
Didn't experience any polygonal problems on SF4 so it really only has happened in SU.
But I still have my doubts that the CD is the problem because I don't find it logical a CD can be damaged to display graphics like that, damaged CDs would just completely or temporarily just freeze up the game Besides, In Eggman land there millions of Polygons in the scenery anyway which is probably why it's very evident in the first two parts while it doesn't seem to exist in the other 4 parts. Because the first two parts is when you're outside meaning there's lots of buildings anyway.
