So basically im sitting here putting XP on a usb stick because the damn futureshop (electronics chain in Canada, they might also be in the US) told me to go reinstall XP on my fricking netbook or i could pay them.........80$ to do it

that's a big W_T_F

So basically now they close in about an hour and 30 mins and this is my last day to return so im basically racing against the clock

How are your guys electronic stores these days? i doubt they can't get gayer than this

yawn Smokingg
... They never check the Laptop when i returned mines, just told them it wouldnt boot, didnt even check the computer, just made sure it included everything.
Why not just make it look like XP?
by the way it won't be proper xp your putting on it will be emulated

i made a proper usb xp disc

i had to get an xp iso open it up decompress some ini files do alot of editing recompress and put the back and burn iso

it was a proper xp usb install without a pagefile
i even made a dual-bootinglinux xp flashpen with my 16gb
turns out i didnt make it in time today, but the guy said (as i got when they were closing) that he would to the return tommorroow so i guess all is well

still pretty lame; i hate it when customer service bitches for this type of stuff...
Futureshop is Canada's Best Buy.

But what did you do to your netbook?

Well, do they even have any obligation to accept a returned Netbook?  Here, if it's in pristine condition (ie never used, unopened), most stores charge a "restocking fee" if you return it...

I don't want to sound mean, but I think them allowing you to return it isn't too bad.

I removed my windows 7 install with an ubuntu live usb, so basically there was no OS on it. I did this because i didnt want them to find personal files + it was windows 7 etc

Well it isn't too bad, but the fact i have to go an do something so simple just made me mad because it never said anywhere that it was applicable, maybe if i knew before hand with their return policy (it didnt say anywhere or anything about an OS being installed) then i wouldnt have wasted my time and barely got there

I just do hope that i will be able to return it :(
Generally, when you return goods, they need to be in their original form.  For example, if you buy a wooden chair, you can't really expect a refund if you return it the next day and it's in pieces.
$80 does sound a bit much, but they do have to pay someone to do it after all, plus there's the licensing cost of Windows XP (they obviously don't get Windows for free).

Anyway, good luck on the new laptop - hope it works out :P
