AMD is due to launch it's new range of Phenom II processors January next year. What's rather interesting, though, is the naming scheme.
Two of the processors they will launch are named "920" and "940", which obviously is echoing Intel's naming scheme for their i7. What's more, is that the Phenom 920 will run at 2.8GHz, as opposed to the i7 920 running at 2.66GHz, and the Phenom 940's 3GHz vs i7 940's 2.93GHz. Additionally, both i7 and Phenom II's have 8MB of L3 cache, not mentioning that both are manufactured on a 45nm process.
In terms of performance, it is to be seen whether AMD can come within range of Intel, but the naming scheme seems to be another AMD tactic if you ask me.
Or, AMD could be trying to push forward their upcoming Dragon platform, which I think is just a motherboard chipset with integrated Radeon HD4850 graphics - and aim for the mid-low end market...
AMD is sure to hope that it gains some ground. They have been totally blown out of the scene by the C2D series. Their 90 nms & 65nms were simply no match for the 45 nms of Intel.
I am keenly looking forward to the launch and benchmarks. Even if the performance between the newer Phenoms (I think three are upgrade to the current Phenom series) is similar to i7s, they will be cheaper (as AMD is always cheaper than Intel)... that could help them regain market!
Let the fight commence!
i switched cpu this year and i don't think i go back to using AMD,. ;p
i read the new intel cpu's will be 40% faster,. :) with some new advanced feature's i can't recall now,..
unless AMD can pull something really clever out the bag....i7 has a whole host of clever features to make it a very interesting CPU to investigate...
Interesting indeed...I have been an AMD supporter since my first AMD K5 400mhz which was overclocked to 420mhz for religious reasons...
Then i had updated and tried all of the AMD cpu in between that up to my current E8400 core2duo...I agree that core2duo was the highest jump in performance from one generation to the next and the phenom was supposed to keep up, but ended up getting dusted pretty good later in the year by intel again...
Im looking forward to seeing how these run.
Well, I am planning my i7 920 build mid Jan to early Feb. Am currently in the process of collecting the parts, and I just don't see AMD's Phenom II being better than the i7 series. I've been hearing stories of amazing OCs on stock voltage, with confirmation of the 920 going to 3.6 GHz on stock voltage. From what I've read so far, most speculation is favoring Intel. However, I'd still love to see a close competition if only to start lowering prices a bit within 6 months or so.
I'm very new to the computer scene, but am trying to learn, partly by building my own PC with my father, who has built many. This is definitely becoming an exciting time with the competition getting as heated as it is. I can't wait for more games to become more quad core based, as then wee should really start to see what these babies are capable of in the gaming scene.
personally, I feel that AMD needs to pull of a miracle. Period. Of late, Intel chips are way better than AMD. Especially for gaming. Interesting one sided reversal.
depends on the laptop, but generally the answer is either no, or not really....

Because I want to upgrade my laptop's AMD TURION 64x2...
Another question is, its possible to change also the video card? Thanks!
probably, and not very likely... depends of manufacturer...
Meh... just upgraded to a AMD Quad few months ago, I have no intentions to switch CPUs anytime soon, but I'll keep an eye on them^^
