Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
Well the title already tells my question^^
Wee gonna switch to a cable provider in three weeks, will it be likely that I still have a dynamic IP or is it more normal for cable providers to give static IPs? Just asking because of Megaupload etc...

Dunno if anyone knows something about German providers but it will be Unity Media if this helps.

Thanks for help/info in advance Gongxi

RE: Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
I've tried looking around and couldn't find anything, however, Modern internet connections tend to utilize Dynamic IP Addresses.

RE: Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
i don't know it works in europe but here in the states 90% of cable based internet is static.. in fact ive used several different companies now and all where static... so ask them when you go to sign up.... also you could release and renew your ip.. sometimes changes it.. sometimes doesn't...

RE: Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
If you want a new IP simply change the router MAC address and reboot the modem and router :p

Works with my ISP...

Works on my too.

Isn't having a static IP better for normal internet use?

I can understand wanting a dynamic IP for some undercover stuff.

RE: Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
Well the issue is gone.... the copampany made a mistake while checking our connection, there's no cable internet available at our house... Since wee want to get rid of AOL wee will go with a new standard DSL provider.

I just hope they will make it quick since our AOL contract only remains for 3 weeks.

How long does it usually take before a provider makes the connection available?

RE: Cable Internet! Dynamic IP?
with me it took about a  week and a half from initially contacting  the company to getting online. after a few days from contact, they will send you  a username, password and 'Go Live' date from which your account is active. a few days later they send you a new modem etc... if you already have a modem and the 'Go Live' date has passed, you can simply put in your username/password and it will work with your current modem. That's what i did when i moved house. i just use  the old modem even though its a completely new account with a different company and different  speed.
