Okay, you guys know how much I want to get an iPhone, right? Well, after playing with a 3G iPhone at an Apple store, I've made up my mind to get one within the next 4 months. I want to get a black 16GB version. So I was looking around for prices and whatnot, generally hating the human population for how much they're charging for iPhone 3G's on eBay, and hating AT&T's prices, when it dawned upon me. I realized something.

Okay, let's look at prices.
The Original iPhone costs $400 for the 8GB and $500 for the 16GB without a plan. The iPhone 3G costs $200 for the 8GB and $300 for the 16GB with a plan, $600 and $700 without a plan. If you get the plan, the Early Termination Fee for AT&T contracts is $175. Lets price it out, shall wee?

First off, I'm not getting anything lower than 16GB. If I get the inferior iPhone 1 with no contract, I pay around $500. Not really worth it, imo, what with the new features of the iPhone 3G. If I get the iPhone 3G with no contract, I pay $700. Crazy. However, if I take half an hour, get an iPhone 3G with a contract, I pay $300. Then, I cancel that contract immediately for $175. That means I pay $475 for a 16GB iPhone 3G. that's $225 less than the no-contract price, and $25 less than the original iPhone. Add in the fact that my awesome aunt said she would pay for about $100 of a new phone, and I end up paying $375. That's cheaper than an 8GB original iPhone.

Hooray math!

Good thinking...but...I am pretty sure that your credit report gets tainted and says that you can not uphold a written contract!  Don't quote me on that, but I thought I heard that sometime ago before there was ever such a thing as an ipod.

I already have an AT&T contract, and I just want to add data to my existing plan, then put my SIM in the iPhone after I unlock it.

If I ever did switch plans, it would be to T-Mobile, which the iPhone already supports when unlocked.

I talked to a friend about it, and she says it doesn't do anything to your credit as long as you pay the full cancellation fee. You're thinking of what would happen if you just default on the contract, ie, just not pay it.

I was looking at the UK iPhone provoder (02) and i saw they had separate terms and conditions for the iphone only.. so look into that.. might be something stoppin gyou.

If you already have an at&t contract all it does is add 2 years onto it.  
You don't have to get a new contract with a new phone number.

Hell no. I'm not payin $100 a month for 500 minutes, 200 texts, and unlimited data. I can get unlimited data added onto my current plan for $15 a month, as opposed to the $30 a month iPhone contract. Plus I don't need 3g, I just want the other features of the phone.

It's not in my name though. The problem is that it changes the cost per month to about $100, which my aunt, who pays for my cell phone, can't afford.
