Unfortunatly most LiveCD distro's don't support booting SATA optical drives yet (they are still pretty rare), although I have just been reading up on kanotix, that 'should' boot from SATA I think.

Hmm, U3, doesn't quite sound that attractive to me - I don't understand how it works underneath, so I don't trust it :P

Meh, most of the things I have work on a normal USB stick anyway.  I just hope I can salvage mine...

goto u3.com it explains it..anyway i have no ideas to what you can do so i was just reccommending the pendrive itself as its been working really nicely for me.. the u3 thingy is juat an extra.
hope you can save your pen drive though.
