RE: dual booting..
Well, I'd recommend it, I actually triple boot right now (Vista, XP, Ubuntu) cause of some work I do.  It's always a good idea to become familiar with a linux system if you want to do a lot of coding.  Yet I find myself in XP the most.  Your hard drive can be partitioned however you like, so long as the partitions are large enough to hold the basic OS, and room for your files.  I like to have my Windows partitions larger, and store most of my files there, since Ubuntu can access windows-formated drives, while windows can't access linux filesystems.

good luck!

RE: dual booting..
yes, but you need to configure it to be able to read/write to ntfs, otherwise it will only be able to "read" from it.

RE: dual booting..
there are a number of ways to mount the disk, more or less, they all use the same driver "NTFS 3G"  yet some will automatically configure it and others require you to edit it yourself.  honestly, i can't remember how i did it myself.  I downloaded something my friend recommended to me.  there should be a bunch of tutorials somewhere...

RE: dual booting..
yeah, vista and XP use NTFS (by default...  XP can also use FAT32)  «- as the main partition with the OS.
both can read and use Fat32/FAT as storage, but neither (to my knowlege) can access any of the linux formats (ext2/3, reiserfs, swap, etc) and there are a lot of them.

so yes it can, but vista cannot be run from FAT32 like XP can.

Did you even read my post? :P

Click on the first link I provided. It tells you exactly how to setup your ubuntu OS so that it can read/write to a windows partition.

@tomokatsu
I don't think you read my post either. The second link takes you to a util/driver thingy that lets you read/write to an ext2/3 partition from windows just like a regular drive. I just don't know if it works on vista...I've used it on xp and it works great.

RE: dual booting..
hey draggy, sorry, i must have missed ur post for some reason.  what I had meant is that without modifications / 3rd party apps, XP an Vista can only access Fat/Fat32, and NTFS.
