Thanks for presuming I'm no noob. :)
No. I haven't made that mistake.

EDIT: But I did leave the kernel in 1.5! Unfortunately, changing it back did nothing.

I do. I'm just re-flashing 3.40 again to see if that fixes the problem.

Well also enable the "plain modules in UMD/ISO" to see if that helps. | |

Nope... I've tried all the above suggestions and I'm still getting a blank screen after the PSP logo disappears - right where you'd expect the game's own 'loading' screen to appear. I'm not getting any activity on my memstick either...
Just to re-iterate - PSX games run fine so the problem lies in the connection between the disc tray and the iso image. It's acting as if the 'No-UMD' option was turned on with a game that can't use it.Double post Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to get my donkey to bed before Mrs Cleric kicks the spoon out of it.
Tomorrow I'm gonna use the recovery folder and go back to 1.5. Then I'll go back to 3.40 and see what happens.

If I don't go now I will launch my PSP up my back garden, aiming for the large lump of concrete in front of my shed.   « Not a happy chappy.

Thanks everyone for your help though, I can at least see a light at the end of the tunnel.

EDIT: I've gone down to 1.5 and then cleanly installed 3.30 OE and no ISOs load. I'm really very worried.
