Well, I found the icon under C:\program\windows live\messenger\msgres.dll.
I located the icon in ICON/46/1033

Now, how can I set this as the default icon?

Others might be interested in achieving what you have; is there anything you havent mentioned that wee would need to know?

I don't think so. I right clicked convo, right clicked Windows live messenger, swapped icon with the DLL path (you have to navigate manually there or it won't work). Then pick the icon. That's about it.
