Well technically you could watch the movies first but since they are 2 movies so far they rush some things, and in the TV series some characters get better character development. I personally recommend seeing the series first so you get a good understanding of what it is you're watching when you see the Rebuild movies. Also because the second one deviates from the original storyline. And yes they are pretty damn good movies.

This one I liked, very heavy and over the top sort of action and it relies a lot on that momentum to keep you going so it sort of sags in the middle when it turns more srs business but then picks back up with a pretty unforgettable ending.

I wasn't a big fan of the second season and I watched the first 6 episodes (I don't know why I did that) of the endless 8. the other arc was the one leading up the part where they made that movie but that arc made me hate Haruhi so yeah..
