Well actually, you could stick anything in an MP4 - the actual file format doesn't really stop you...

Considering the camera makes MJPEG AVIs - I'd guess that. Though IDK how subtitles get in there. Even if the PSP accepts subs in AVI, I don't think you'd really want to be using MJPEG >_>
Just use PMPlayer AdVanCe if you must have soft subtitles.
