RE: Secret No More: Revealing Windows XP Mode for Windows 7
Ooh, this is interesting.  It's been known that XPM requires Intel-VT or AMD-V to operate, but it actually doesn't use it...
Quote:But VirtualPC, the virtualization package that Microsoft bought and on which XPM is based, is a binary translation solution, just like VMware. So the question then becomes, why did Microsoft mandate VT support for XPM?
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/20...p-mode.ars

What's even more interesting is that the cheaper range of Intel CPUs don't support VT either, so it means that if you have an Intel Atom, E5xxx, E7xxx or Q8xxx series processor, you can't use XPM (it works on E8xxx, Q9xxx, Q6xxx and E6xxx CPUs I believe though).
Of course, many corporations do use the more budget models, so in a sense, XPM is even more useless.

^ Just stick to standard VMs.  A little more inconvenient, but MS's solution forces you to use higher end Intel CPUs, or be a good boy and use AMD :P

Standard VM's don't work for me,. i really hope this works better,.
Maybe this just won't work prob on older cpu's>!? do you really think MS try's to force you into buying newer cpu's,..

Also i read something about a bios setting to enable hardware virtual suport,.>?

In what way don't they work for you?  And which ones have you tried?

Vegetano1 Wrote:Maybe this just won't work prob on older cpu's>!?
No, not just older CPUs, on the Intel side, they only enable VT on their "premium" CPUs.  For example, it exists on the E6xxx series processors, but does NOT exist on the E7xxx series Core2s.
Vegetano1 Wrote:do you really think MS try's to force you into buying newer cpu's,..
Yes, either through various deals, or even the fact that more new computers sold = they can earn money through OEM licensing.
After all, virtualisation doesn't require CPU level acceleration, and this doesn't even use it, yet it requires it.

Vegetano1 Wrote:Also i read something about a bios setting to enable hardware virtual suport,.>?
Most mobos enable it if your CPU supports it by default.

RE: Secret No More: Revealing Windows XP Mode for Windows 7
I am rather sceptic about your opinion towards MS,. i mean the fact this is only suported for new cpu's is maybe logical,. cuts costs to skip old cpu suport,. but then again,. maybe your right,..

Over the years i have tried to install vmware to get some retro games to work,. but there always seems to be some prob with settings and or vm window installs,. i have recently tried again and was disapointed to get bad results again so i quickly uninstalled vmware again,. its just so useless,. and i only want vm to work for games all other stuff works fine in win7.

i have't tried the win7 plugin yet,. maybe tonight,. but i think will work fine!
its a free plugin and i am running a perfectly good win7 RC so i say "thanks MS"!

I am generally quite skeptical towards corporations.
After all, the sole purpose of their existence is to make money, not to be nice to their customers.

Vegetano1 Wrote:i mean the fact this is only suported for new cpu's is maybe logical,. cuts costs to skip old cpu suport,.
There isn't any cost cutting here.  Again, this is NOT only for newer CPUs.  This is for high end CPUs.  The E7300 is still a relatively new CPU (only one generation old - and hardly anyone these days is getting expensive i7 CPUs anyway), yet it does not support Intel-VT.
Secondly, MS isn't even using these CPU extensions, so why is it requiring something it doesn't need?  In fact, this additional check can be considered adding to costs, as opposed to cutting costs.

How old are the games?  DOS?  16-bit Windows?  Win9x?
Also, VMWare isn't the only VM app out there.  There's MS's VirtualPC, and VirtualBox (what I use).
