RE: Laptops & desktops
I've never really looked how good ultraportables are. I generally hate slugging things around, so would probably not really use a laptop much.
Disregarding that, maybe a laptop.

RE: Laptops & desktops
Hard question.
If I could only get one, I'll probably get a desktop. I do a lot of stuff, like video transcoding, compression and stuff like that that requires power. So a desktop would be better. (+ 1 thing I wanted to do properly for ages is to the fudgein PS2 without lag. Lags like poo poo on my crappy computer). Unless I'm rich (which may be the case in the future, but definitely not my uni student self now), in which case I'll get a top of the range laptop with all the features of a strong desktop.
That's only of I can get only 1. Otherwise, I'll want some setup like a powerful desktop, and a not neccessarily powerful, but portable laptop, that I can take to places without much hassle. (so portability more important than power.)
...
As of currently, I'm still sitting on a budget 2600 sempron with integrated graphics (I play games on my mom's laptop, which has a decent graphics card). So I might actually look at upgrading something soon.
