While there is a similar type of concept which is become the pokemon master. It's not quite the same as those anime I've mentioned before.

Replace pocket monster with magical girl.
Replace Pokemon trainer (person who owns the Pokemon) with some dude who owns/has special bind with magical girl.
Replace fainting with death.
Replace formalised tournament with an informal melee.

Change a few of the nouns around and you have essentially the same thing. Might not seem that way at first, but one could say that many stories share the same generic formula.
Which is why I try to focus more on the small creativities throughout the show.
