Despite not making any money, Microsoft has decided to buy Skype for a huge $8.5 billion in cash, largest ever acquisition Microsoft has ever done.
Many are suspecting the primary reason is to boost its Windows Mobile platform, though MS could gain from some other aspects of Skype.  A number of shareholders fear that MS overpaid this deal, similar to a number of past MS acquisitions.

More can be found on the WSJ article.
all i can say is they better not remove skype from the psp 2000/3000.

This also means skype isn't coming to the ps3 anymore :/

$8.5 billion is alot of money O.o
Seems like a strange idea, i thought this when i read this yesterday. For that kind of money, surely they could have developed their own VoIP technology which they could have integrated better with their own technology, rather than buying a system which only works on top of what theyve got instead??
^ I'm guessing they're buying in on the ~200 million user base.
are they gonna scrap MSN then?
it used to  be the superior IM program for me.
The first thing I said to my wife when I heard this today, was "I guess that's the end of Skype, then".

She didn't get it.

I fail to see how a 200 million userbase valued at $2.5 billion fairly recently, is worth the 8.5 they paid, under any circumstance
Yeah, 8.5 billion is a lot of money. A bit too much...
I spy skype for the xbox 360 sometime soon...
I just hope Microsoft doesn't start charging people to download and use Skype...
