Depends on which kind of CD/DVD tray you're talking about.

My laptop has a tray loader, but it's one of those ones with a spindle, and you clip the disc onto the spindle before sliding the tray in.
Desktops and xboxes usually have that tray where you just put the disc in, no spindle.

I prefer the spindle-tray first, as I believe that there is minimal to no chance of disc scratching by the tray. If I can't have the spindle-tray, I'd take a slot loader, for the fact that there's no tray to accidentally snap off or something.

i'd love it if my laptop has a slot loader =[ it feels soooo slick
Slot loader

bit so many people hate them because they don't use them properly

e.g. the ps3 one

some of my friends push the disc in (needless to say why this is bad) >_> or take it out, let it hang and put it back in again.

NEVER do either, if you accidentally eject a disc do not try and put it straigt back in, take it out and then put it back in again, otherwise the release mechanism will break.
^ some people push tray loaders too V_V

ah but if you break a slot loader by pushing the disc in

good luck getting the disc out again

unless you completely disassemble the drive

so in that respect Tray > Slot ^-^
or trays are for nubcakes :3
you don't let those kind of people change the disc in the first place.
Difficult one actually. Tray loaders seem cheaper, and more versatile (as in they can take miniature 8cm discs) but slot loaders just have an awesome factor to them. I don't like the slot loaders on the current model Macbook Pros though. They sound cheap and delicate and load/eject the disc far too quickly.
