Bookr.
Make sure you're feeding it simple content, eg not something full of graphics like a magazine (the black and white screen in the first post doesn't look like it will handle these types of things any better).
I had a book in .lit format which I converted to .pdf, fitting the page exactly on the screen (dimensions for screen are about 6.75" x 3.75" for PDF without zooming). It's all text, with a little bit of formatting here and there perhaps (eg italics) and since it all fits onto the screen, you don't need to scroll - just use L/R buttons to navigate pages.
Also, Bookr does seem to handle larger files slower, so divide the book up into multiple files. I typically divide it into 200 pages per PDF.
Again, not the most elegant solution, but works reasonably well, and battery lasts a while.
I tried doing that, but i just couldnt do it comfortably, and it took me 5 or 6 hours to get through what was probably 2 hours worth of prose for me on the PSP
I can see the purpose in an ereader, but i just don't find them as confortable as a real book, and half the point of reading a good book is the feel of it (for me at least), so im afraid based on my experiences i'd tell you to stick with second hand shops and Amazon for books...between them its a fairly low cost habit
