Try Rainmeter for gadgets...It's an open source, community managed program that has a lot of things out for it. It's what you see on most users' desktops.

But it's fun making your own stuff and seeing it work in rainmeter
If you have multiple screens like mah I would also advise DisplayFusion

Adds extra taskbars to other screens and adds some useful hotkeys and things
