implying, you have a clean HDD, what are ur usual steps to get back to full steam?
launch IE - download chrome - download channel chooser - update chrome - change chrome theme - change windows theme - install cs4 - install office - sync bookmarks - find a good wallpaper - insert passwords into sites - download itunes - copy files over
backup my user folder to an external HDD

install OS

copy all files back

install programs from compressed archives

install any remaining programs

give my drivers a once over
Install drivers via USB.
Refer to program list generated by CCleaner and get off to downloading
Tweak out the OS for performance gains
Move user folders to dedicated partitions
Backup OS drive
Run driveImage XML
Install previously made image
???
Profit
write down all my programs
open synaptic package manager
mark all upgrades
go to install/remove applications
mark my programs for installation
mount windows partition
copy over user folder to linux partition
reinstall windows
re-enable grub
boot into linux
copy user folder back to windows partition
profit.
Have backups of user folders.

Re-install OS
Install drivers
Install AV/Firewall
Copy over user folders
Tweak for performance
Tweak for visual pleasure
Install applications
CCleaner and Defrag
Anything else I forgot

Online bookmarks and passwords get added as I go along.
Generally...
  • Move everything off to external HDD.
  • Install OS onto now clean HDD.
  • Change the settings to my liking.
  • Install all the programs I commonly use.
  • Make sure everything works good, then it's a good time to make a backup/sysrestore point.
  • Move everything back from external HDD to main HDD.
Me:
1. Put new HDD in old comp
2. Partition & format drives appropriately
3. Copy across data onto dumping partition
4. Make a stripped copy of Windows and dump to external HDD
5. Take out HDD, put in new comp, install stripped Windows
6. Make sure Windows works properly, install drivers, change settings etc
7. Install applications and slowly migrate and clean out stuff which I dumped earlier
