 End of The Silk Road
02/10/2013 05:24 PM Posted by: Davis in Random News
You might or might have not heard of the Silk Road before. If you have not then you just need to know that it was basically the largest online market for drugs. As of today the Silk Road is no more (unless some other site takes its place but I doubt it).

Reuters Wrote:U.S. law enforcement authorities have shut down "Silk Road," an anonymous Internet marketplace for illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine and criminal activities such as murder for hire, and arrested its alleged owner.
Rest of the article is here

Did anyone here ever buy anything from there? :p

GTA 5: fan stabbed and robbed of new video game
17/09/2013 12:29 PM Posted by: Jem in Random News
Quote:A Grand Theft Auto fan was hit with a brick, stabbed and robbed of the new computer game moments after queuing to buy it.

The 23-year-old was attacked as he made his way home from a supermarket in the early hours of this morning.
He had been to the Asda superstore in Colindale, North West London, which had opened late for the worldwide release of the fifth version of the notoriously violent game at midnight.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Wee were called at 1.20am to Princes Avenue, Colindale. A 23-year-old man was shopping, then on his way back home he was hit with a brick and stabbed.
"He was robbed of items he had bought from a nearby Asda supermarket, including a copy of Grand Theft Auto."
Police believe the attack was carried out by multiple suspects but said it remained unclear how many were responsible.
The victim was taken to a north London hospital, where he was in a stable condition this morning.
Detectives have asked witnesses to contact Crimestoppers with any information on the attack.
Twitter users meanwhile expressed their shock at the violent mugging, with one writing, "It's just a game".
The release of Grand Theft Auto V was expected to break sales records after hitting the shelves today.
Amazon, the online retailer, has already sold out of the game, which reportedly cost around £170 million to make and market.
Experts estimate it could generate £1 billion during its first year on sale when gamers are predicted to buy some 25 million copies.
Kevin McFeely, from the GAME store, said the company opened as many branches as it could last night.
GTA V has received rave reviews from critics across the board, who have labelled it "one of the very best video games ever made".

Sony Reveals New Hardware: PS Vita TV
09/09/2013 03:12 AM Posted by: TatsuyaXD in Tech News
Sony revealed a ton of stuff tonight at its pre-TGS press conference, but perhaps the biggest surprise (well, other than a PS Vita redesign) was the unveiling of an all-new piece of Vita-related hardware. It’s called PS Vita TV, and it lets you play Vita games on your television... and do a bunch of other stuff, too.

PS Vita TV is a tiny piece of hardware. It’s about as big as a deck of cards, measuring 6cm by 10cm. It’s the smallest PlayStation hardware ever.

The idea of PS Vita TV is to let you play Vita games on the big screen using a DualShock 3 controller, but there’s actually more to it than that. While PS Vita TV has a card slot for Vita games, and accepts Vita memory cards, it will also let you use video streaming services (such as Hulu) and more. It will even let you play your PlayStation 4 via Remote Play with DualShock 4; this functionality will come later via system update.

It will also let you play PSone Classics and PSP games through it, again using the DualShock 3. And it will connect to PlayStation 4 so that you can play Vita games through PS4, as well.

PS Vita TV launches in Japan on November 14th, and will cost 9,480 Yen ($95). A special verison of it, packing an 8 gig Vita memory card and a DualShock 3 controller, will cost 14,980 ($150). It sounds like it will eventually be released in the west, though a specific release date (as well as pricing information) is still unknown.

Atelier Meruru Plus is out and about.
05/09/2013 08:38 PM Posted by: Cirehpsa in Tech News
Atelier Meruru Plus is out.

Now I got Atelier Totori Plus and was kind of disappointed, or more like pissed simply because it was digital only and you couldn't delete individual save data so in order to have one total save data you had to constantly back it up to your computer and the game was 3gb's so it took half an hour to back up your current save and was ultimately a pain in the donkey.

Well I am happy to say, although still pained as it is once again, Digital Only. Atelier Meruru Plus does have a individual save data delete option, so you can rejoice and get the game, without having to be furious about your messy saves.

Now if only Gust would update Atelier Totori Plus to have the same option.

Another thing to note, Atelier Totori Plus had some severe slow down moment's when loading character models into an environment, this has been fixed by the addition of loading screens, instead of just throwing you right into the next environment you'll have to wait at a black screen for a little bit, but it's a lot more pleasant, then lagging about.

And Here's a wallpaper I shopped up for those of you who have both Atelier Totori Plus and Atelier Meruru Plus

Apple trying to trademark the word 'startup'

Quote:Apple trying to trademark the word 'startup'
http://tmwatch.net/2013/08/28/apple-hopi...m-startup/

Apple has lodged an audacious Australian trade mark application for the term ‘STARTUP’, covering a whole host of products and services.

The ‘STARTUP’ application was lodged yesterday, August 27, by the Californian headquarters of Apple and a Sydney-based legal representative, Baker & McKenzie.

If accepted, Apple would hold the trade mark of the word ‘STARTUP’ under various retail, computing, mobile and educational classes. Specifically:
  • Class 35: Retail store services, including retail store services featuring computers, computer software, computer peripherals, mobile phones, and consumer electronic devices, and demonstration of products relating thereto
  • Class 37: Maintenance, installation and repair of computer hardware, computer peripherals and consumer electronic devices; consulting services in the field of maintenance of computer hardware, computer peripherals, and consumer electronic devices
  • Class 41: Educational services, including conducting classes, workshops, conferences and seminars in the field of computers, computer software, computer peripherals, mobile phones, and consumer electronic devices and computer-related services; providing information in the field of education
  • Class 42: Design and development of computer hardware and software; technical support services, namely, troubleshooting of computer hardware and software problems; installation, maintenance and updating of computer software; technological consultancy services in the field of computers, computer software and consumer electronics; computer diagnostic services; computer data recovery

...

The trade mark application is at the very early status of ‘Filing – Approved’, meaning it has not been seen by an IP examiner.

Huh. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be off eating an oblate red temperate-tree-growing fruit.

Orbit Downloader executes DDoS attack, claims ESET
25/08/2013 05:14 PM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Tech News
Heads up for those using this application.

Quote:Researchers at security software company ESET have found a remotely-updating DDOS functionality built into a popular Windows download manager, Orbit Downloader.

The DDOS function appears to have been in the program for some time. When the orbitdm.exe program is run, it starts a series of communications with the servers at orbitdownloader.com, the end result of which is that the client system silently downloads via HTTP a Win32 PE DLL and a configuration file containing a list of URLs and a randomly-generated IP address for each.

This program and the list are used to conduct either a SYN flood attack or a wave of HTTP connection requests on port 80 (the HTTP port) and UDP datagrams on port 53 (DNS). The IP address that accompanied the URL in the config file is used as the source address for the attack.

[...]

ESET expresses surprise that such an attack would be included in such a popular program. It is a distinct possibility that the company's web site has been compromised by an outside attacker who is using it and the software unbeknownst to the proprietors of Orbit Downloader.

At the time of this writing, a vulnerable version (4.1.1.18) was still available for download on the company's site, and the URLs used for downloading the attack code and config file were still live.
