France Breaks Train Speed Record; Arnie Taunts Californians
07/04/2007 12:08 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
Quote[Image: tgv.jpg]A souped-up TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) broke the train speed record today, speeding along at a whopping 357.2mph. Loaded up with two supercharged locomotives and oversized wheels, it broke the record on a specially prepared track east of Paris.

Apparently Governator Arnold sent a delegation to check the train out, pondering the feasibility of bringing the speedy train to California. According to our West Coast contingent (i.e. Blam and Chen), however, the chances of that actually happening are slim to none. Sorry, Californians.

iPod Slows Enemy Bullet, Saves Life
06/04/2007 11:54 PM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
Quote[Image: ipodbullet.jpg]Kevin Garrad of the 3rd Infantry Division is an iPod user for life—which incidentally got extended thanks to Apple's little music player. He was on patrol in Iraq when he met an armed insurgent carrying an AK-47. Both opened fire, and the bullet heading toward Kevin hit his chest right where his iPod was, which was enough to slow down the bullet to not pierce entirely through the body armor.

The fact that he had a 20GB (older and thicker) iPod probably helped slow down the bullet more than if he had one of the newer (and thinner) 30GB ones. In that sense, an Archos would probably be enough to stop a tank shell.

 Air Shower Removes Germs, Dignity
06/04/2007 11:39 PM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
Quote[Image: Manner_Jet.jpg]In the land of the rising sun, germs are a concern. That's why this $15,900 "air shower" actually exists there, forcing despondent salarymen to subject themselves to a crazy wind tunnel that sucks the pollen and germs out of hiding in their various creases and crevasses before they enter an office building.

It seems kind of effective, but I prefer the American method of just wiping your snot on your sleeve. Different strokes, I guess.

 Not DRM again...
06/04/2007 07:27 AM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Tech News
Quote:AACS patch for WinDVD, HD DVD and BD players: update or never watch movies again

In case DRM hasn't caused you -- the honest consumer -- enough pain already. Check it, you've got some required software updating to do now that Corel has introduced a patch to their cracked InterVideo WinDVD software. Best do it pronto too. According to Corel, "failure to apply the update will result in AACS-protected HD DVD and BD playback being disabled." That means no more hi-def movies for you, Mr. assumed criminal. Thing is, this is no ordinary patch since WinDVD exposed the hardware specific device key to video pirates. So not only are you required to update their janky WinDVD software, you also have to track down and install the paticular AACS patch for the HD DVD or BD player you own. Of course this only patches one flaw in the massively compromised DRM boondoggle. And just think, you can repeat the whole process again after hackers circumvent this latest attempt at "content protection." Isn't DRM nice?

 A Real Bluetooth Controlled Car
05/04/2007 01:41 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News

QuoteThere's a slight chance this is an April Fools gag, but apparently some guys rigged up a Nokia Series 60 phone to control an old car via Bluetooth. Not as cool as when Michael Knight (wee've got him on the brain apparently) or James Bond did it, but hell, they're controlling a car from a phone. It doesn't get any more bad donkey than that.

The app is simple and just allows steering, brake, and gas. That's pretty much all you need, really, save for an emergency stop once the car gets out of Bluetooth range. You wouldn't want it to keep on going. Someone could lose a torso (those are important).
