Visual Novel Translation program
Hi guys, I wonder if anyone knows the name of a certain app....

I remember, a long time ago I read about a program that reads the text of a Visual Novel game (or any other app I think), runs it through an online Japanese dictionary and displays the translation back in a separate window.  I know that such a translation would be far from perfect but since I watched the Anime of the game I want to play (Soul Link) I will know enough details to live with it...

Thanks for help in advance Gongxi

To download, or to read?

I'm pretty sure you'll have no trouble downloading with all your internet connections which are like at least 10 times, up to 200 times faster than mine. Sadist

As for length, well, the length is usually attributed to the fact that there is usually many arcs, but if you just read through a single arc, it'll be many times shorter.... Which can probably still be very long. I've never read anything that is ridiculously long, but from my pathetically little experience, I'm far from the position of being able to generalize.

And there are short ones that you can finish relatively quickly. True Remembrance and Narcissu are good choices for that matter. And short does not equal poo poo. Like for anime, 13 episodes doesn't at all mean it's worse than 300 episodes. (Infact, I prefer 13 episode series far more than 300 episode ones. I hate long anime full of filers and no storyline progression. Waste of time. But that's kinda off topic to VNs.)

Speaking of which, I read a few chapters of it - should finish it off sometime.  So far, it's really a pessimistic drama, but I'm quite interested to see where it goes. ;)

As for the program SkyDX mentioned, I'm a bit dubious.  Sure, translation is possible, but how is the text grabbed?  OCR?

isn't ocr for scanners? i guess it would have to actually read the characters, because it has to display them for you without losing resolution so it would have to be actual characters, then maybe that app goes into it and translates it... I'll have to look into this when i get home

Optical Character Recognition.

By OCR, he means by the programs that are programmed to recognize the shape of characters. Basically used to extract text out of graphical media. For example, like getting subtitles out of hard-subbed videos.

Narcissu isn't that long. Takes maybe around 3-5 hours or something?. Read it in one go. You'll enjoy it more.

Yeah, i don't completely believe in this program either. I guess a program can be made for certain types of VN using the same engine, since the text will be always stored and read in the same way, but different VNs have very different engines, and thus it will become very difficult.

RE: Visual Novel Translation program
Well I found the program, it's called "Oh! Game Text Hooker" and it just hooks into the games process to get the text. Afterwards it copies the text to the clipboard where you need another program called Atlas to translate it.

Here's a tutorial for anyone interested

Note: The tutorial uses Oh! Text Hooker, but Oh! Game Text Hooker is newer and better.

Got it working but as expected the results are rather bad, maybe I can find a better dictionary file^^

Wow, that's pretty bad.

But I find that having previously watched the anime, it spoils the VN a lot (at least for the route that the anime takes). You already know what's going to happen, so it's not as interesting.

Kinda, but not exactly falls under that

Assassinator, from some time past Wrote:Meh, at least to me, whatever format, the 2nd time I watch it is always a lot less enjoyable, mainly because I already know the storyline, and what's going to happen. So most of the "interestingness" will be gone. And there is little left without the storyline.

My theory is that if you have the time to watch the same thing over again, it'll be a way better investment of that time to just watch something new. After all, you'd never run out of stuff to watch, even if you watch 24hrs a day. Watching new stuff will give you a higher enjoyment/time ratio.

So I pretty much never watch the same thing twice. (Or play the same RPG twice, read the same book twice or anything like that for that matter.)
