computer making a weird noise
Hey, I installed this on my Windows '98 comp:
http://www.psp-vault.com/UpDownload-req-...id-873.psp
so I could transfer files from another comp, to the memory stick of my PSP, to the Windows '98.
But when it asked me to restart, I did, and now the computer makes a consistent, annoying noise since I installed it. It might be trying to read a file or something like that on the hard drive.
Before I tried this, I used a 3 1/2 floppy to transfer the files.
Do I have to uninstall it, or just change something?
By the way, the '98 doesn't have internet.
The company is Compaq.

RE: computer making a weird noise
srry i can't see then link i have to be a member n stuff, but all i heard is that compaq computers have restricitons on software that cause it to spaz out, and also it might be that your hdd is a bit too old dude, i had a windows 98 hdd that i reformatted because i wanted it to store stuff on it since it was small anyways (10g's) and after awhile of using it it would spaz out too making weird noises like you said trying to read some file, then it broke down and i put a hammer to it :)

i don't think it's the hdd, because it was rite after i installed the driver for the comp, and it was working before
the computer is pretty old, but there's a 95 one at my grandparents place that still works okay
i could always try wiping the hard drive, put the important things on disc, but i do have a couple games on it
or i could defragment the harddrive
BlackNinja Wrote:How would you describe the sound?
If its a short dull crunch followed by a high click over and over it means back up your stuff, your hard drive will be dead soon.
Try taking the cover off to find where it's coming from, It could just be a loose screw. I've had lots of screws go loose over the years, (Har har), Usually a constant buzzing.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling that software?
i tried uninstalling the driver, didn't work, and i ended up uninstalling something i wasn't supposed to, i need to find the windows 98 disc to reinstall it
the sound is consistent, keeps going, but sometimes you'll hear something different, it goes crazy when i try to load something
worth trying to take the cover off, the comp ain't of much worth

RE: computer making a weird noise
Where's the sound comming from? The HDD I suppose?
Software can't do much to cause hardware faults - I'm guessing the two things are independent. As BlackNinja said, your HDD is probably dying.

RE: computer making a weird noise
sound is coming from the cpu
most likely the harddrive,
also, if the hard drive is dying, and i wiped it clean, would that slow the aging process, and possibly stop the sound?
i don't really have anything important on the computer, so it wouldn't be too bad

Don't really know. How old is the computer? I still have a 1.3GB HDD on an a 11 year computer and it still works fine.
Anyways, new harddrives are really cheap these days anyway. I don't think you can really slow down the aging apart from not using it at all.

Yup.
Funny sound = Mechanical failure = Certain doom.
