I was bored, so I figured I'd post some sketches from my sketchbook to show you guys the sort of things I work on in my spare time. They're pictures of my sketchbook I took with my camera, because my scanner currently has a severe case of the gay, and I'm trying to fix it. This is an idea I've had for the past 2 months, and I've been constantly expanding on it.

Coming up with this device has made me think about going in to product design when I'm older. Also, it's currently unnamed, so if anyone has any suggestions, please, lay it on me.

Anyway, it's a line of handheld all-in-one devices. There are 2 models, the big one with the widescreen (HD, Cinema, or something similar) and the one with the little 4:3 screen (mini, nano, or similar). Both have basic touchscreens for easily navigating the menus and a QWERTY keyboard that you access by sliding up the screen (big) or screen and face buttons (small). The big one has pressure-sensitive d-pad and face buttons, R & L buttons, and 2 analog sticks, while the small one just has digital d-pad, face buttons, and R & L buttons. Both have Start, Select, and Home buttons, although I didn't draw them on here. The volume and brightness controls will be on the bottom of them, while a power/hold button in PSP style is on the side or bottom (haven't really decided yet). I also had this cool idea where the person buying the device chooses what add-ons they want, like wi-fi, bluetooth, etc. That way, you don't pay for the stuff you don't want. To get an idea of the their shape and size, imagine a T-Mobile Sidekick with a bigger screen and gaming controls, and a GameBoy Micro with 4 face buttons instead of 2.

The main menu for both is a sort of idle background with some animation looping (I chose the XMB wave just as an example and because I was out of ideas :P). This animation can be changed and customized by the user. It has a dock like the iPhone on this idle screen you can put shortcuts to the apps you always use, and the contents of that dock can be changed on the fly. There's an icon on the idle screen where when you press it, it brings up a full menu of every program you have on the device. Everything can be skinned and changed, from the background animation and the battery icon to the dock background to the order of the icons on the expanded program list. Also, all of these user mods will exist as separate files without any over-writing of the base files, so there's no chance of permanent damage.

It'll have an open SDK, so people can create all sorts of programs for it, from games to email apps to painting programs to organizers.

And I never intended it to be a PSP ripoff, it's more like my dream handheld, but it's been evolving to a bit more than that. And the screen thing was just a placeholder, as I'm not good at size to resolution stuff off the top of my head, so it was just to get an idea of it. And 480x270 is 16:9, PSP's screen is slightly off that, and I wanted to stay in the regular ratio. And like I said, it's evolving. The stylus would be on the top. I just haven't drawn it with it yet.

And why is it that everyone constantly says "iPhone rip-off" if the interface even slightly resembles it? Apple didn't invent the dock, and they didn't invent a grid-based interface. They just popularized them.

Anyone could say that about most Portable Competitive Devices....... squee..

You did seem to lean towards a PSP-like design, metalgear, and you have a good concept, and whereas its a good idea, you may as well look at the GP2X vvvvvvv




Which [if I remember correctly] has an open platform.

Preferably, though, leave in your mind the thought of a whole new portable gaming concept... because that's what wee want ultimately, real new ideas.
