Websites
What exactly is a server and why do some sites need to keep upgrading?

How do you publish a plain "**********.com" site.

How was this site created?

Well I'm just interested and wouldn't mind setting up my own site one day. I did look up how to setup a mybb forum but I got lost in all the ftp stuff.

umm?

A server is just a computer designed to serve data.  Any PC can be made to be a server.
Some sites keep upgrading because... the admins have nothing better to do?
Could also be "maintenance" or backing up.

You will need to register a domain name (yes, you MUST pay for it) and be on some hosting service which allows domain hosting (free ones are available).
I'm presuming you're not planning on making your home computer a server.

This site was created when I was very bored and couldn't be stuffed doing anything else.

RE: Websites
FTP's simple. if you're running vista then windows explorer can act as an FTP. so you just type in ftp.xxxxxxx.com and it opeens up your server (probably asking for a password first though). but once its opened up, you can just drag and drop things and as you drag things in, it uploads it to your server.
if you're not on vista you can use fireftp for firefox or other ftp programs, they all pretty much work the same way.

What's wrong with that?

EDIT: Currently doing this http://community.mybboard.net/showthread.php?tid=26637

EDIT: I've also just thought, this probably isn't a good idea with a 2gb download limit a month

umm?

RE: Websites
you can get server specific hardware, such as motherboards which allow for multiple CPU's (redundant hardware, so that if one fails its still runnibg) and heavy duty hardware designed to take more wear and tear than an average PC would allow

I think...i know the motherboard think at least, were doing that in college
And to run a server you need a specific OS, such as Windows Server or i expect theres a linux distro designed for Servers (ill eat my hat if there isn't)

RE: Websites
Any distro makes a far better server than anything win server can handle.

FTP folders existed in Windows 2000.
Still would never use it.  A dedicated FTP client is much better IMO :P

It's unlikely you'll have a fast enough connection speed.
This server (and most others) runs off a dedicated 100Mbps line - okay, you won't need such a fast connection at first, but will you be able to get such a thing?

Not really - EP is running off a virtual server (ie, multiple servers hosted on one physical computer).  A relatively new home computer should handle low loads easily.

They really suck.
