Our workplace just updated to IE7 from IE6. Businesses refuse to update until they've been proven for 3+ years it seems.

One of the web programs they used was designed for IE5. Rather then spend money and update they app, they just stick to the old browser. And the company is Bell Canada, the equivalent to a huge telecom giant like AT&T in the US.

Same reason corporations use Windows XP still. Some apps don't work 100% in 7 so they just don't update. It costs the company money to update the software, then more money to train the staff on the new software.

Blockbuster Canada was still using DOS in 2011!

And some banks/airlines still have a lot of their stuff coded in COBOL, probably running on some dated UNIX system.

Though I'm not too sure about the XP/IE6 argument, but then again, if there's no tangible benefit in upgrading, I don't see a business doing it.
