RE: PS3 full backup, what happens?
probably wise to backup anyway. i didn't do it when my first ps3 died a couple years back and i had to restart everything again. to be honest though the only thing i really miss is ps2 compatibility (still have no idea why sony took it out)

I guess so the production cost shrinks and so they can sell us PS2 classics on PSN now Dotdotdot And yeah you have a point, I guess I'll keep the backup, though I lost my gameshared Burnout and Dark Mist, not too much of a loss as I own Burnout legally on PC anyways^^ And sorry about you loss >.<

Oh and the restore took about 16 hours in the end :/

RE: PS3 full backup, what happens?
ps2 compatibility was removed because it contains exploits just like actual ps2 does, some of the ps2's lesser known software flaws are actually essential for it to function, so they can't be patched.
The thing is that the ps2 emulator inside a ps3 has a wide access to the system and sony is afraid of that. Not that the chocolatety ps3 scene ever gets anything done with it anyway.

and yes, also so that they can make you buy your ps2 games again for no reason.

anyways, the ps3's backup takes long because it's programmed by an idiot. The ps3 backup consists of a raw disk image of your hard drive, that is then encrypted, compressed, then split into 4gb pieces (limitation of FAT32 hdd's such as the one you need for the backup because sony are too retarded to implement NTFS or reiserFS support.) After all that spoon is done, the pieces are then garbled once more in an attempt to prevent hackers from messing with the system files that are inside.

they failed though, lol

basically 20% of the time you backup/restore is used for backing up / restoring. the remaining 80% is used to n compressing, encrypting, decrypting and uncompressing.

welcome to sony <3

Well I wouldn't call Microsoft charity at all aswell Sadist

With a XBOX 360 you can't use free services like Twitter unless you pay, you can't use your own HDDs and instead have to buy expensive Microsoft HDDs unless you mod them, Microsoft makes it very hard to put any free2play games or extensive free content on XBOX LIVE, they charge you for online play even in cases where Microsoft servers are not really involved like in P2P matchmaking situations and they charge developers if they want to patch their own games on LIVE. Oh and guess what, you can't even _upload_ screenshots to the Forza community without having gold so Microsoft is very far away from a charity I would say... >.<

Sony might be a bit unlucky with OS development though atleast they shaft users and developers quite less than Microsoft^^;;

RE: PS3 full backup, what happens?
Well, I kinda have to agree with that :/ Maybe I should sell the 360 and instead buy a PS3?

I would say lazy more than unlucky, though. They should really have much, much better OS development considering.

Well I would that depends entirely if you have any XBOX exclusive games you like and if you regularly voice chat over the XBOX itself, if these two things aren't important to you I would say you would be happy with a PS3^^

And yeah okay I guess you have a point there^^; I read a article once that mentioned that Sony has little OS developing knowledge and that they don't really have many people who are OS developers in the first place so they should really hire more people for the PS4 in that area >.<
