So, you hate QuickTime + iTunes?  Lol.

well i guess i like iTunes' GUI and everything about it except the long start up time.
and i hate the Quicktime GUI and the fact that it only plays .mov and .mpeg4 (i think it also plays the mpeg2, mpeg etc)
because when i download shows etc, they are usually .rmvb, .rm, or .avi, and if they are ever .mp4, i put them on my PSP to watch instead

yeah, quicktime (and most other players) have very chocolatety compatability with some formats (most formats if u consider all the uncommon ones)

ben3gfc Wrote:because when i download shows etc, they are usually .rmvb, .rm, or .avi, and if they are ever .mp4, i put them on my PSP to watch instead

To playback all ur videos on ur comp, i suggest u get a codec pack, some suggestions are the k-lite mega codec pack, storm codec pack, cole2k codec pack... and then use mpc (media player classic) to play the video. mpc has the best compatability, and plays everything, thru direct show, if u have the right codecs installed, it is also one of the few players that can support most if not all other video features such as different subtitles formats, swapping between multiple streams, chapters, menu and other stuff.

use real alternative to play .rm and .rmvb files.
use quicktime alternative to play quicktime files.

Solely on playing back music, mpc is the probably also the best audio "player", but it's only good at "playing" audio, it doesn't do anything else. So Winamp is probably the best overall, since u got music libraries and can sort music and all that stuff also.

RE: Favourite Music Player
iTunes renders everything through QuickTime - so what QuickTime supports, iTunes will.  If you want, try out MediaMonkey - it has an interface similar to iTunes, and supports most of Winamp's plugins.

As for MPC being the best music player, Winamp can also render through DirectShow, so Winamp can actually support more formats than MPC (you may have to fiddle with the DirectShow plugin though).

Mainly, iTunes doesn't support OGG Vorbis (which I rip all my CDs to) and HE-AAC :+-: PS

RE: Favourite Music Player
Xmplay over Winamp and Itunes, For music.
Winamp Over WMP for video.

Xmplay will play any Winamp plugin.
MOD IT XM S3M OGG MP3 WAV WMA CDA are standard formats that are included.
However I have over 40 listed filetypes that can be played on Xmplay. including:
PSF = Playstation/Playstasion 2 music file
USF = N64 Music File
GSF = Gameboy Advance Music File

and it's smaller than winamp.

RE: Favourite Music Player
Hmm, Xmplay sounds interesting.  By the way, all the formats you mentioned are playable in Winamp through plugins.
Thanks Syfe!

I hate Itunes. It takes long to open, and It's really big.

Just tried it, but it does seem to have some issues.  Really small (300KB+!!!) and pretty good, but I couldn't get it to load my AAC files, muxed in MP4 or not.  WAV worked fine, and I suppose Vorbis and MP3 should.  I tried copying all my Winamp plugins to XMplay, but the program crashed on loading.  After deleting random plugins, I managed to get it to start and work fine, but even though Winamp's AAC plugin is there, XMplay refused to load any .aac .m4a or .mp4 files... Erk
Also no global hotkey support - looks like I'll be staying with Winamp for now...

*EDIT* Managed to get it to load the AAC file by unticking verify file contents, but it refuses to play.
