Intel Push-Pin cooler mount sucks serious balls...
I've just been given an old base unit by a friend from work. Specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Celeron 2.8GHz Socket 478
MoBo: ECS P4M800-M
RAM: 512MB Hynix DDR
HDD: Hitachi DeskStar 160GB IDE
Graphics: Onboard
Audio: Onboard

For some reason when he built the system he replaced the stock Intel 478 cooler with an Intel 775 cooler. He removed the 478 mounting bracket from the motherboard to make space for the 775 cooler. (The pin mounts in the motherboard are in the same place.) Why he did this I've no idea since, in my opinion, socket 478 has a far superior HSF mount. None of this push-pin nonsense just a good solid sprung bracket mount.

I just can't get the 775 cooler to stay on properly. It's on now (just) but there isn't much pressure between the HSF and the CPU. Temps are higher than I'd like but still within Intel's recommended safe limits (hitting 60 degrees, safe maximum is 67 degrees.) The fan is going full speed constantly and the noise is starting to get annoying.

Whoever designed this mounting system deserves to lose their job. On another poor design note, the case designer too deserves to lose their job. I had to remove the RAM and the CPU cooler to get the hard drives into their bays (I've added another 160GB IDE and a 320GB SATA. I plan to use it as a replacement for my cardboard box computer-server. Anyone remember that?) The screw holes were too small. I had to drill out 2 holes before the hard drives could be screwed into place.

Oh well. It was free so I can't really complain can I...

yeah. id never go with a push pin cooler. its really more of a gimmick so people can *think* theyre 1337. but, as my motto goes: "free's free".

I actually spent 2 hours (yes, I checked the clock) getting my custom cooler on my Socket 775 CPU.  Especially annoying when you press down one corner, but can't get the one on the opposite corner to go down - pushing too hard causes the one you pushed in to pop out, so you make no progress...

As for the case, do you have one of those older small ones?

I've talked to the guy. He's going to drop of a new 478 cooler for me. Not too bad eh?

Heh, my brother spent a similar amount of time too. he bought himself a new case, and he though while he was at it (dismantling everything to put into new case), he may as well apply some nicer thermal past than what he had. Supposed to take 2 minutes, ended up taking 2 hrs.
