Uni servers are phail
For certain courses, wee need to do a "sign on" before the course commences to pick a time slot for lectures etc.
The Uni typically opens up the sign on at a certain time and date (then closes it off later).  Unfortunately, it's typically a mad rush to sign on early since I learnt after my first year that most of the good time slots get taken in like 5 minutes after the thing's been opened.

Had to do one this morning, but when accessing the web site, well, you get a nice "server load is too high" message (after waiting ages for the thing to respond).  Actually managed to log in once, but quickly got kicked out again with the same message.
It's an hour after the thing's open and I still can't get in - well, this sucks...

RE: Uni servers are phail
Never happened to me here.

Uni servers are awesome here. Our quota just got updated to 1GB a DAY (from previously 10MB a day, big improvement much? i guess too many people bitched that 10MB is not enough), although they said they log everything, and said they will find you and screw you over if you P2P or download illegal stuff >.>, and the internet speeds exceed 5MB/s upload, (megabytes, not megabits, so way fast).

1GB/day is damn crazy - most paid internet plans here won't give you 30GB/mo.  Our cap is 400MB/mo (was 200MB/mo last year) - usable if you disable images like I do.  Can buy additional quota however - there's a "special" going on now - 30GB once off for $50 (which actually isn't too bad, though I won't do it).

Uni also gives you a free 1GB USB if you attend any of the uni library discovery tours.

They're like $2 each anyway.

Finally can get in without waiting forever, though the sign on link is gone - wonderful...

Just downloaded myself a Linux distro the other day. (700MB)

The uni won't be using that kind of home plans like me and you. They'd be on some extremely fast (T4, T5?) unlimited connection, so they don't really give a poo poo how much you use, it won't cost them any more. BUT although they say they give you 1GB a day, if you use even close to that much (on a regular basis), I bet they'd check up on you and screw you over.

I'm kinda too scared to sPa/\/\ that internet. Don't want to loose it. Maybe I'll start renaming all my files before I download. Half Life 2.iso => Barack Obama Speech.avi?

And the 1GB is non stacking. So if you don't use any today, you don't get 2GB tomorrow.

SSH tunneling + Firefox Portable is the best way to cover your tracks (I don't think Unis bother with all the monitoring software that high schools have).
Through traffic monitoring, all they can tell is a lot of traffic, but they won't know anything about the nature of it, including what server the file is from.
