Quad core too much? AMD says triple core is the way to go.
Is AMD trying to play another smart game?  It has somewhat been lagging behind Intel in bringing out quad core CPUs, so instead of fighting a battle, why not try and make quad core seem useless?

Quote:Wee'd heard rumblings about this newfangled three-core approach just two days ago, and now it looks like AMD has went and got all official on us. According to the chip maker, the forthcoming Phenom is "expected to be the world's first PC processor to integrate three computational cores on a single die of silicon." Additionally, it was noted that this design was "a response to demand for increased performance delivered by multi-core processors when running state-of-the-art applications," and AMD apparently hopes to grab the market that isn't quite ready for quad-core CPUs but could use a bit more oomph than their single or dual-core chip is delivering. The devices are set to land sometime in Q1 of next year, and if you're interested in digging around a bit more in the marketing buzz surrounding these bad boys, be our guest.

Q1 next year - maybe a little late to grab the market methinks, assuming Intel can ramp up quad cores across its range (and persuade most people to get them).

Doesn't the processor in the 360 have 3 cores as well?

who needs 3 cores. its like, if u want to upgrade from a 2 core (a bike) to a 4 core (a car) u don't go getting a tricycle, lol

There seems to be quite a misconception surrounding these x3 parts, ther aimed firmly as the replacements for the sempron design, ie. cheap as chips phenoms.

These chips will just be the failed quad phenoms at a greatly reduced price.

AMD is trying to wedge itself in-between and probably trying to capture the mid to low range market...  which is typically what the majority of people buy.

I'll be grabbing one of the quads, but for budget rigs this is a good thing, you get the same arcitecure but at greatly reduced cost.

how is triple core going to be 'budget' when theres plenty of older dual core models that are more than enough for any 'budget' pc and are probably cheaper? i don't really think itll be much of a success unless they market it really well and have really rly low prices.

Phasing out products can cause price rises.

Just look at how DDR2 became cheaper than DDR, and DDR became cheaper than SD.

Their idea is _probably_ to make the triple core CPUs their midrange product, and dual cores their low range product.

There product line calls for Sempron chips still based on the latest Athlon architecture to be there budget chips, then Phenom to be the rest with the triple cores being far cheaper than the quads. The triple core chips can be significantly cheaper than the quads because they in effect cost AMD nothing as there production costs are met by the quad's pricing.
