Feelsy in the most KyoAni sense possible. They never fail to work those sadder notes for the sake of the stories they tell. They way they do it is just magic, in my opinion, and it's every element - of the visuals and the sound - that play a part in it.
The pacing was fast in the first half of the episode and it put me off a little in truth - things were moving too fast. It was like time was made to allow the sadness that followed to sink in - and actually, it worked - so for that I forgive it. It must be hard to avoid setting a singular mood for all 20 odd minutes... and then not making one or more of the moods purveyed seem half-hearted.
Kousaka's moment was great - simple yet meaningful - and it will prove to be the necessary catalyst for what's to come. She vented the bubbling frustration felt by both the club members and the shows viewers, I think!
Teacher and Adviser Noboru is playing hard-ball with the club and I think it's important the he is this way. While the club members seem to show desire, there's very little to no real heart in it. It needs to be brought in - a real hunger to do something great together - and hopefully wee'll get to see the start of it in Episode 4.
If the show runs for 20+ episodes I think wee're in for the best show KyoAni has produced in some time - and that's worth getting excited about.
Having just watched episode 3 I can almost really only repeat what you said Sensei^^ A short note to the visuals, I really think this might be KyoAni's most impressive work to date! Sure some scenes like the one at the train-station was a bit low quality which stood out against the rest but only because the rest is so incredibly detailed and stunningly beautiful, especially outdoor scenes during sunset :o That said I don't like the CG scenes very much, I can see why they are used but the animation still feels a bit out of place to me :/ (Also I still can't get rid of the Persona 4 feeling I have when watching the anime, not that it's in any way a bad thing but I still find that mysterious and can't even really point out what makes me feel this way^^;; )
I also agree that the pacing felt incredibly rushed in the first half which felt really odd as the actual atmosphere was pretty lazy alternating with sad and at a few cases happy but as Sensei said it worked out in the end. It got pretty evident that something is amiss in the Wind Ensemble club and I feel the clash of pacing and atmosphere managed to nicely submit this "something is off" feeling to the viewer. Not to sell KyoAni short but I wonder if it was 100% intentional, if it was, well executed there! :D
I also agree that Kousaka's practice and shout was something that blew the oddness away for the club and the viewers alike. Wee got a small glimpse of what went wrong with the club before but judging by the ending things seem to finally get into gear for improvement! Noboru's harsh way with the club kind of rubbed me the wrong way but I have to admit that he has a point. There's little to no point for him even casually practice with them if they really aim for the competition if the members aren't in harmony with themselves, let alone each other :/ Kumiko also seems to be a bit apathetic about the club for the better part of the episode but as said the ending and that she actually took the Euph with her to maintain it shows that she already cares, even though not by very much at that point I would see.
I really look forward to episode 4 now, the character dynamics are still there and KyoAni managed great to decouple the overall mood from the actual characters' moods, for example while everyone was sorta down, Sapphire-chan, Kumiko and Asuka still felt like their usual selfs while obviously being affected by the gloom. I wonder how it will turn out now that things supposedly are on the uptake!
But okay for now I really should sleep, good night EP! xD
EDIT: Says does anyone know when FFF usually gets their Hibike sub out in the week? :o And Sensei check your Twitter DM's please! xD
