The Examiner reports that Firmware update 3.50 means a controller may now be disabled 'if it works via USB and if the product isn't licensed by Sony'.

Yeah - that is a load of poo poo.
They are just trying to block anything like PS3 Jailbreak from happening in the future.
In the meantime, millions of PS3 owners are having their console's features removed one by one...    :/

You say that, but lets be honest, how many of us here have USB-based 3rd party peripherals?

(Other than the fact USB flash-drives may not be working anymore?)

I can understand Sony wanting to fight against the hackers, but I think they're going overboard with some of their methods.
