The controversial bill, which was passed in the UK's Lower House of Parliament, was enacted to stop people from downloading copyrighted material.

With the bill rushed through the legislature before the dissolution of Parliament next Monday,
critics had complained that innocent people could be be cut off from the internet, simply because they chose to share a wireless connection with illegal downloaders.

In the case of a Wi-Fi network being used in a household or in a free neighbourhood situation, illegal material could be downloaded by anyone sharing the facility.

The bill was passed by 189 votes to 47 after concessions were agreed that the government would drop a clause that allowed it the power to block sites.

There had been an outcry over the clause which could have prevented whistleblower sites, such as Wikileaks, which carries copyrighted work, from releasing information to the public.

Guess that's one more reason not to go back to the UK.

I don't see how they are going to implement it easily though.. all they'll be doing is banning themselves, the public to a point of internet disability.

It's a sham, nothing more, they will work as hard as they can not to act on it, because they only care about their money, not the media companies

That's the thing. It may just be what the UK needs to form a big enough resistance to this bill. The more people they disconnect from the internet (most likely innocent people, since they don't even need proof), the more people want a change to this bill.

It's not about stopping piracy. The "first uploaders" often use methods that make it hard to track them down, so this bill that goes after the common downloaders is not about that. It's about getting money. Industries that want money use settlements (for thousands of dollars each) against the people they accuse.
