yeah but its different, you needed a PC, and you used the keyboard connected to the pc. verry laggy, this would be a usb hub connected to the PSP which had a keyboard mouse and usb stick plugged in, no lag.

  • If you connect the PSP to the PC's USB, and select the Camera option, the computer will apparently detect an audio/mic device.

IR shell is pretty sweet, although loading cso's off the PC takes so long its pretty much not worth it

Uhm, just so you know - the camera mode does NOT turn the PSP into a Host. The PSP is not capable of being a USB host.

It does, however, turn the PSP into a different type of USB client device (Thus Windows detecting it as an audio device - if it were a host too, NOTHING would happen) and the camera itself is a psuedo-host, and looks for a client device of whatever Vendor/Device ID, and sends it data. The PSP then decodes the data via PRX, just like it were a host.

If the PSP could be a host, wee'd have external HDD cables already, because all wee'd need is to redirect the FAT/FAT32 PRX and ms0:/ to the USB port, just like DaX redirected UMD access to your ISO files.. I've been working on developing hardware for the PSP for a DIY interface to an external HDD for a while now, my problem is locating low-cost components and financial backing for testing...so I do know a bit about what I'm saying, here.

Also, interesting facts there, though I suspect it's not firmware-limited speeds on photo, etc, as much as that they likely use the second chipset within the PSP (as they do for MP3s, etc - and as SNES9x TYL does for its sound) to handle it.

Hardware decoding is possible I guess, but it seems to slow to me to actually be hardware decoded.  Considering that the PSP can easily decode AVC compressed video at around 70fps on a 222MHz clock, whilst decoding an MP3 stream (not hardware decoded)...  Also, the PSP is quite capable of playing back 480x272 MJPEG[AVI] videos at 30fps @ 222MHz.
True, the streams may be organised better, (haven't really looked into format of video streams or pictures) but the PSP shouldn't be decoding at a significantly slower speed for photos.

I think parts of the process may be done via hardware, for example, zlib inflation during PNG rendering.

I don't think it's specific hardware-decoding, though. Hardware decoding implies the PSP has dedicated hardware for those specific filetypes. As I'm aware, I believe the PSP has a second almost-processor - it's referred to in several places, but the SNES9xTYL documentation refers to it only as the 'me'.. I assume it's a programmable device, capable of offloading a thread for processing, as they use it in SNES9x for its sound support, to free up main CPU resources for the harder emulation.

My reasoning on why Sony would use this for their photo and mp3 rendering is simply to save resources for other things the PSP may be required to do simultaniously. Obviously in the XMB there would be no need for the main core to have extra resources, but it is entirely possible that their audio/image decoding library is hard-coded to use this extra chipset so UMD games and web browsing (and other things the PSP is required to do) automatically take advantage of all resources available.

This is all just speculation, of course, but it certainly would indicate why the photo rendering is essentially at the same rate regardless of core clock.

Have no idea, but the Media Engine's clock may follow the main CPU's clock.
But if the ME is clocked slower, then really, Sony restricted the speed, bring me back to my original point :P
