no DivX is a file format. you can rename to an AVI file format using the command prompt and it works like like any other AVI file.
Example:

"you have the the official DivX (brand) converter... you can convert into 4 different types. Qmobile, Mobile (works with PSP avi players) Home theater or High Def. it will save your file as YourVideo.DivX. after it's finished go into DivX movies and open the command prompt there. type: rename yourvideo.DivX (or you lazy enough... yourvideo.*) to yourvideo.avi"

worked for me.

No, divx is a compression format. You are right that there are no real differences between .divx and an .avi encoded using divx as the .divx file basically uses the same header info as any .avi file does.

In effect it does, it just uses a different extension.

The DivX container is an extension of the AVI container.  They're strictly not the same.

It's also known that people rename AVIs to .divx, possibly to highlight the fact that the video is encoded in DivX.  Nevertheless, the container format sucks :P

Ok, incase ur confused, DivX is a codec, but there is also a container called DivX also. So ur not completely wrong.

But the DivX Zinga was refering to earlier (and what people generally reffer to when they say DivX) is the codec.

Meh, if u got it in the .divx container, why bother renaming it to AVi... the Divx container is i think supperior. AVI is the crappiest container out there still widely used.
