usenet is kinda shady in my opinion, using rapidshare-type sharing forums are far and away better, i admit i can't get a decent speed cause of my isp and i don't want to subscribe to a fast server, but even then i think RS is the way to go

You think unverified random downloads are the way to go, each to there own I suppose.

For me it breaks down like this;

1/ Scene FTP
2/ Usenet
3/ Private bittorent tracker
4/ public tracker using a scene release listing service (like release log)
5/ random torrents
6/ anything else.

Actually, the only fakes I've ever gotten are from Gnutella... I do have a tendancy to read comments for torrents, and actually look to see what it contains, verify the filesizes and so on. I don't check hashes though, but I suppose that's enough to tell whether something's fake in most cases.

Sure Zinga with a bit of thought you can avoid the fakes easy, and with peer guardian you can protect yourself from the MPAA, etc but that's the problem for most online individuals, it takes thought.

Just don't download stuff that's obviously fake, and u shouldn't get much fakes. Taking note of the file size and file type usually weeds out the obvious fakes. Stuff like "warcraft 3.exe" which is 200kb in size is obviously a fake/virus.

Gnutella (limewire, Ares, that type of share) is inferior to torrent in almost everything. So is Ed2k (eMule, eDonkey...).
