RE: About to build my new computer!

Darn tootin'. I recently purchased a 4870x2 and it's pretty sick. I might even go crossfire. And I brung this up because the GTX 295 and the 4870x2 have similar performance.
I was mostly alluding to how certain GPUs that can still be combined in SLI today, like the 8800gtx, and can achieve playable frame rates on some of the demanding games out, when played at a reasonable resolution. Depending on how games start coming out, I may be able to utilize a SLI of two 295s and reach a playable setting in games that might outclass it at some point. By that time, the 295 would be much lower priced, if it hasn't been deactivated already. That was what I was talking about more than anything else. I originally was considering a 4870x2 because of the price difference, but I want the lower heat, and I was able to take another $45 off the price because I combo'ed it with the mobo.

Hellgiver Wrote:Hmmm. Well, I was really against the getting an SSD considering their prices at the moment. However, I could probably get by with just 64gb on an SSD, and put the other stuff on the 1tb storage. If I can find a decently priced 64gb SSD, that has good reviews, I'll go with it instead. I kind of would like to see it go a little bit more mainstream, but I was already going to spend 200 on the velociraptor...
you can read this for a review of the Samsung 64GB SSD.

RE: About to build my new computer!
Vista will run fine on a 24GB partition, which leaves you a fair amount of room for other applications. I don't think games take up much more than 8GB each these days (don't have any newer games, so IDK).
Run 2x32GBs on RAID 0. Over here, I can get an OCZ V2 30GB SSD for AU$139, so two of them will be AU$278. A 300GB VelociRaptor costs AU$455 here, so the SSDs are a lot cheaper.
Plus, 64GB is enough for the OS plus your favourite games. Store all your apps etc on the main HDD, not to mention the SSDs in RAID 0 will rape the VR any day :P

RE: About to build my new computer!
It's the exact opposite here. The velociraptor is 200 USD, and that ocz is 110 USD. So, RAID0ing those two SSDs would be just a little more than using one velociraptor. I had been hearing about bad errors occurring when RAID0ing SSDs, and couldn't decide whether it was just user error (which means I'd be much more prone to it), or just complexity of the tech... Regardless, I think one 64GB SSD will do just fine, so that I'll be able to boot up my OS quick enough for my liking, as well as have enough room to play any game I may want to put on it. Thanks for the idea, guys! I ended up going with the g.skill 64gb SSD since it was getting great reviews, and was very decently priced. I would have liked to have gone with the 32gb Samsung, but 280 USD is just crazy for the tech at this moment, IMO.
Thanks again, guys! I'll keep you all updated as the parts come in :)

RE: About to build my new computer!
You'd be able to get 100% cheaper (half the price), for only like a 10-20% drop in performance, which you probably won't be able to notice anyway, as that 10-20% performance is way in the overkill range (like you would NOT be able to see the difference between 160fps and 200fps in a game).
But then again, as long as your happy with it, and have plenty of money, then go ahead.
