I thought you can't expand RAM in a laptop?

RAM is about the only thing you can upgrade in a laptop.

Yeah, though if it's DDR1, things might be more costly than if it were DDR2.
Is it worth the cost?

If he plans on turning it on and doing anything, i would say yes.

If you want to tie a rope to it and use it as a boat anchor..install windows 7, then attach said rope.
