Networking need help
[Image: craprouting.png]

I used my superior art talent to make this...

so the top router is the good router that goes to the net
the bottom router is suppose to let my computers communicate it has no internet con

not the laptop and the top router are wifi while the desktop is lan

and the bottom and the laptop are lan while the desktop is wifi

how would I accomplish this?

RE: Networking need help
if i get this right, you want both your laptop and desktop connected in both lan AND wifi?

why would you want to do that?

RE: Networking need help
I want to be able to use the second router as a direct connection so as not to suck all my speed juice from the main router
and yes they will still have some form of connection from the main router, but I will let the main router handle that

RE: Networking need help
if your router is N you'll lose no juice as squee says

unless you mean juice as in, internet speed, which is something that WILL decrease if you're sharing it with both your laptop and your desktop, and no matter what you do, it'll be like that...

my suggestion for not losing internet speed would be that you have a physical clone of your modem... >_>

RE: Networking need help
looking at that diagram, I think that what you want is this:

1) a dedicated router, R1 which is your access point for your internet. You want this to be wirelessly connected to the laptop and connect via LAN to the desktop. This is done by any new router-modem.
2) You want to set up a dedicated home network (HN) (to share a media center?) which is not connected to the directly to R1, using a secondary router R2. This HN is based as such that now, the PC is connected to the R2 wirelessly, while you laptop is connected to via LAN.

I have a question. why do you need R2 in the event that you are connecting PC to Laptop? Why not connect it directly? Adding a PCI Lan card, you will get an additional LAN port that can be connected to the laptop's LAN port.

for what purpose do you need two routers for?

RE: Networking need help
yeah....to do that, you will need to have the laptop on for R2 to work, so you'll lose half your connection anyway....

RE: Networking need help
I don't know what your goal is, but here is how i got wireless and wired network connections in my bedroom and family room without running wires.

First router with wireless gets connected to the internet
Second router, depending on the type, gets a DD-WRT firmware installed which will give the option of becoming
A) Repeater/Bridge
B) Client/Bridge

The differences here are with A) The wireless signal will be repeated by the 2nd router and anyone connected to that repeated signal will have 1/2 the normal wireless speed. This will only affect local transfers between computers..unles you have an internet connection of more than 20mb/s.   Anything connected via ethernet should be connected with full wireless speed to the other computer.  If you have a laptop right next to router B it will connect wireless to router B.

With the choice of B) The wireless antenea are ONLY used to connect to router A and only using the ethernet ports can the internet be contacted when connected to router B.  If you have a laptop right next to router B it will connect wireless to router A.

This is a very easy setup for those who do not want to run wires in the house..I currently have 3 of these setup in the Repeater/Bridge mode to blast wifi signal all through the house, and to have an original XBOX connected in the bedroom and family room to stream video from my pc to xbox!  Standard divx and dvd iso files all play via wireless with no lag!

To see if your wireless routers are compatable go to http://www.dd-wrt.com

I am currently using all WRT54G routers, and walmart has them onsale right now for $39.95!  (I just bought the 3rd one last weekend)
