RE: computer making a weird noise
doesn't matter now, i fixed it
this is gonna sound so sad but i uninstalled the usb drives, and not the software i installed, so i removed 2 things i didn't/maybe shouldn't have, and wasted a lot of time
all i had to do was go to add/remove programs, and remove the software, had nothing to do with the hard drive
by the way the ram is only like 200mb or something :S

RE: computer making a weird noise
I installed XP fine on a 533MHz Celeron, 128MB SDRAM. But you need to be able to tweak things if you want to run XP on such a low powered comp (without too much overhead, that is).

exactly what i have and it runs perfectly fine, kinda slow when starting a process: ecoding video to another format, but it speeds up and its ok
edit:
i also added a little memory to mine too, and i seem to have a bit less processing speed but its still over 500

RE: computer making a weird noise
SP2? SP1's way better. No security centre poo poo.
Encoding will always be really slow on old computers, because:
1) They're single core
2) They don't support the more recent processor multimedia extensions (eg SSE1/2 3DNow! etc)
3) They're just far behind in processing power.
As a comparison, a 20 minute anime episode took 6.5 hours on my old computer to encode into MPEG-1. On my current computer, it's about 6 minutes :P

beaner2k6 Wrote:srry i can't see then link i have to be a member n stuff, but all i heard is that compaq computers have restricitons on software that cause it to spaz out, and also it might be that your hdd is a bit too old dude, i had a windows 98 hdd that i reformatted because i wanted it to store stuff on it since it was small anyways (10g's) and after awhile of using it it would spaz out too making weird noises like you said trying to read some file, then it broke down and i put a hammer to it :)
Oh well i got the same problem before,i broke 3 hard drives ,the just started makin wierd noises,But you should test your electric conections in your house.Since i put the UPS,i got no problem till now.
Oops never mind i see you fix it.
