Yeah alright.
I'm not willing to move around my partitions anymore, so I'll just deal with booting it from flash.
And I've got a systemrescuecd flash drive, with a script that restores grub to /dev/sda for me. :p

Why not? It's the only other distro I've managed to install without a CD drive, and I kinda liked it too.

I'm gay.

get a gparted live cd, and move them overnight. set it to move when you go to bed and wake up in the morning. you're going to be kinda slow booting from flash. it shouldnt take that long to move the partitions, a few hours at most, and im sure you can sleep through that.

well you're trying to get a distro that is more of a "hardcore"(for lack of a better term) linux, right?  try arch/gentoo/slackware any of those shouldnt be too hard to install off a usb. slax just always felt weird to me. its more of a portable OS, and i can't see using it as a primary operating system.

Yeah, systemrescuecd has gparted, and that's what I used to move my other partitions. I already spent (literally) an entire day moving partitions, and I really don't want to do it again (even if it's overnight). I like how my HDD is setup, and I will be using Windows extremely rarely to where it's not even worth it.

lol yeah basically.

Arch wouldn't install (partitioner was yelling about my HDD), Gentoo wouldn't boot of my flash, and Slackware is like 3453 different CDs, so I don't see how I'd get that to boot. And I think slackware is a little too 'hardcore' for me anyway.

get the dvd installer
x86: http://slackware.com/torrents/slackware-...vd.torrent
x64: http://slackware.com/torrents/slackware6...vd.torrent

heres a howto on installing from a usb http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/doku...re:usbboot (alien is a slackware god, and creates tons of ready-to-install packages for the OS, so you never have to build things yourself if you don't want to. he's also responsible for getting x64 to be able to run x86 programs by implementing a multilib environment.)

its not particularly hardcore, and its what you should lean towards if you're trying to learn the system. also, with very little work, you can get it to run at almost no resource use, and build it to what you want it to be.

RE: Help me install Windows XP!
wooooooo. Got XP installed using my own nlite creation, and I don't need to boot from my flash drive to get into Windows (with out moving any partitions!)

yay!

and @tm: I shall attempt that at a later date! For now: gaems!

edit: lols, this XP install is ridiculously fast. Yay for nlite, and shaving 300MB off XP!

I'm gay.

From my understanding, you can only launch the GUI install from Windows by running the EXE.
The text install is the only option if you boot off the CD.

Depending on how things are done, sometimes the partition/drive numbers change when booting differently, eg, you have:

Code:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS

This may actually differ when you've got a USB key plugged in, depending on how you've or the BIOS mounted it.
But it works now anyway.

That's actually how I got it installed lol.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it was trying to boot Windows from partition 1, thus giving me the error. But telling my BIOS to boot from my flash drive, then telling that to boot from partition two allowed me to complete the install.

And I think adding the 'boot' flag to my Windows partition allowed it to be booted without the flash drive. I don't entirely understand the flags, and whatnot, but both Windows and Linux boot without any problems, so yay!

I'm gay.
