RE: Wow shopping at dell SUCKS!!!!
I am all about building my own computers!!  Have been doing so for the past 15 years.  But sometimes companies just don't care about the cost savings :(

No, what is insane is the last guy they hired to do the part time job was told the 'backup system needed to be looked at which is running symantec'

He said 'symantec?'

They said 'Have you ever heard of symantec?'

He said 'I will have to check the owners manual of the computer to see what that is'

They said 'Our antivirus and backup software is both made by symantec, looking at the computer's owners manual will tell you nothing'

That is when they FINALLY called me to take things over!  LMAO  Even my wife knows symantec makes antivirus software!  LMAO

LOL! some IT guy...

my school has a bunch of dell workstations for programming. i really get a good laugh out of the fact that my laptop is both cheaper and faster than the desktops at a computer engineering school.

This is completely true.

In the office I'm at the boss will only get Dells for some unknown reason (the hilarious thing is that he favours british brands but still gets Dell >_>),

Wee had order problems with monitors they said were in stock - what they did was completely delay the order until the monitors were back in stock instead of asking us if wee want to change monitors to get things packed and shipped.

Our boss got on the phone and threatened to switch to HP, asked em why they're fudgeing us around and ended up getting them to upgrade our monitors for no additional charge.

RE: Wow shopping at dell SUCKS!!!!
There's a number of reasons why companies go to places like Dell, rather than self build:
- When you have a large number of PCs, eg 1000's of them, the chance that some will fail over time get rather high - with Dell/HP etc, it makes things easier to get replacements, rather than hunting down what part of the PC is problematic, then chasing up with warranty on the individual failed components
- These companies most likely perform some stress tests on the machine before giving it to you, so the chance of failure in the first place is probably lower
- Saves you doing a whole load of this sort of tedious work, especially since you're not exactly the one paying anyway
- It actually might be cheaper if you think about it.  Companies need to pay staff for maintenance, including building the system etc.  The premium you pay for these systems already include some of this.  If you're not constantly deploying new machines, it doesn't necessarily make sense to put a lot of money into HR for finding short term contractors to do this for you.

$125/hr - that's damn nice!
