QuoteComputer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.

There's general agreement amongst PC resellers that Vista has provided a minor boost to PC sales, but hasn't produced blockbuster numbers. A similar story applies in the retail space. Figures from marketing consultancy GfK suggest that after an initial sales surge, around 1500 copies of Vista are now being sold through Australian retailers each week, according to a recent report in the AFR.

I'm gonna go ahead and have to disagree with you there, SX. I've been running XP Pro since it came out and I've yet to have any problems with viruses, nor have I ever gotten spyware, malware, or anything like that.

I'm no guru, but I know my machine is somewhat secure because I went ahead and turned off certain services, and I set up a security policy, going as far as to change the name of the administrator. These are things which you can't do in XP Home.

The best protection is just to use your head and run some sort of anti virus. If you're running firefox, get noscript to keep websites from installing things or tracking you.
Ok, if you got it all secure then there will nothing happen, BUT

when you don't have a virus thing, or a really bad one :P then you got very, very much virusus.
My friend that has that pro edition, reinstalled it 3 times because of all the virusus, spyware bla bla bla all of that stuff........

So now back to the point :P

-Without protection: Pro is worser than Home :P
I'm not trying to start an argument, but viruses don't just find their way onto your computer of their own free will. It still takes some sort of human interaction for them to be active on your system (email, website or otherwise). I also run a copy of XP Home on my laptop, which is my dumping ground for torrents, downloads, etc. Still no problems. Re-installing XP isn't something that should have to be done that often. It sounds to me like operator error on your friend's part.

I think wee can both agree that Windows sucks, but not so much because it's got flaws, but because of the huge community of people that actively seek to exploit those flaws. Macs and Linux boxes don't have nearly the problems that Windows machines do for the reason that people don't hate Apple or Linux the way they do Microsoft.

This is the same reason that Internet Explorer is always under siege while other web browsers are more secure. They probably have their flaws too, but nobody cares as much.
^^Yeap, though one thing about Linux and Firefox is that, being open source, they have a much larger community of developers, and updates can be made a lot more frequently, so theoretically, they can be more secure.

I've never gotten viruses before - just download stuff from trusted sources.  Though being rather pro-efficient at computers, I can easily identify a virus (eg a rouge process is a good sign of an unwanted program).  I only have a firewall installed.

Anyways, I've tried Vista, and don't really understand the hype behind it.  Actually my experience with it is it's less stable than XP - I managed to freeze it by using the Win+Tab combination (dunno why it does that though).  Considering some of Vista's features (ie BitLock and the USB memory thingy) - I'd prefer not to have them.
