and also storm codec pack is an addon for wmp and advises you to use the latest wmp

Storm comes with MPC packed with it, and considering that it is a pack of codecs, why would it have anything to do with WMP? (What version of storm are you talking about?) Storm is not a WMP addon.

And as for displaying, both WMP and MPC uses DirectShow to render the video. So it is correct that all the codecs works for both, if that is what you mean. But why would that matter?

Why do you think storm is a WMP addon? Storm is like the preferred codec pack of choice for many places in the world, and is a pretty god codec pack...

squee666 Wrote:actually your wrong each codec pack is different

Each pack is different, true.

As for what codecs are in each pack are set to play which type of file, it should be the same. Most of the difference involves what codecs are in and what are not (eg. K-Lite has a very complete set of codecs, while CCCP doesn't have as many).

squee666 Wrote:while k-lite codec pack is just a full on codec pack which isn't an addon and comes with media player classic  but the codec works on all media players.

I haven't used WMP for a few years now.

Trust me, Storm is a normal codec pack. Not a WMP addon.

squee666 Wrote:so the issue more than likely is with your codec pack or media player
because as i remember windows media player 9 and above hates to play incomplete files

I cannot change what windows tries to preview with. (I think). If it tries to preview using WMP, and WMP failes, can't do anything about it really.

from the codecs in this pack its not a full codec pack

k-lite codec pack has alot more codecs and the installation also removes and detects broken codec files

hmmm... Interesting...

Although I say the person who wrote this is a complete idiot.

Storm comes with MPC, and upon install, it changes the file associations so the default for everything is MPC. If it really was a WMP addon, why would it do that?

And it wouldn't be called a "codec pack" then. It would be called something like "Storm Addon". Because, a codec pack is a codec pack, that is a pack of codecs... which has nothing to do with WMP...

He probably thinks that Storm ==> DirectShow. And WMP ==> DirectShow, therefore Storm ==> WMP. Bad logic. And that will apply for every other codec pack as well, since they are all related to DirectShow.

While I do aggre with you that K-Lite is a more complete codec pack (as in, has the most amount of codecs, and probably the "best", in that regard)...

But that has little to do with explorer screwing up... And storm has played everything I wanted it to play in like 3 years. So I don't really need these extra codecs anyways. Most likely for very obscure files that most people would never encounter.

And it's not broken codec files. Because nothing can play a file which has no header, and only a bit MBs of data in the whole 150+MB thing scattered somewhere in the middle.
have you updated storm yet cause its on 7.*

also that site free-codecs.com is the main site for all codec packs
they are always up to date
I've got the most recent.

And being a person who screws around a lot with videos, a lot of encoding (some of it command line, like Zinga style), and have encoded to almost every popular video format, DivX, XviD, H.264, 3ivX, VP6 (Flash Video), LMP4, and Snow... I have a pretty good understanding of how codecs, and the whole video display procedure works. I'm very sure that the codec pack is good, and not some WMP addon. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to all that.

I've actually used many codec packs before, and that includes K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, Combined Community Codec Pack, Cole2k Codec Pack, and XP Codec Pack... Basically I try out a new codec pack each time I install/re-install windows on computer... And from comparison, I can tell you also that there is nothing wrong with Storm.

The codec pack is not natively programmed by English speaking programmers. So something might have screwed up in the process of translation or reporting with that mumbo-jumbo about WMP addon...

.... ....

I appreciate the help, but in my opinion, that's really not the problem.
I know it's not really a perfect solution but whenever I have a problem folder like this, I use WinRAR to browse it. Never failed^^
